Background

Bohai Bay is the second largest bay of the Bohai Sea. Two big cities, Beijing and Tianjin, are located near the northwestern coast of Bohai Bay. With the economic boom in its surrounding areas, this ecosystem has become one of the most degraded in China.

15 sediment samples were collected from five different locations in Bohai Bay intertidal zone in may 2008. Six trace metals ( Cr, Cd, Zn, Cu, Ni and Pb) were measured. Results indicate that sediment grain size plays an important role in the distribution and fraction of the metals.

The samples have been catagorized according to the classification of Shepard (1954).

Except for samples A3 and B3, the grain size is very similar among clayey silt sediments or among sand and silty sand sediments.
